Strong Women in Movies

This year has been a great year for strong roles for women in movies. Even in the seemingly testosterone-driven movie starring Mickey Rourke The Wrestler had a complex, not mere set-dressing spot for women, although why does it have to be the angry lesbian daughter and the other role is a stripper? I could relate to the characters but not really identify with them. But we had Doubt, and Mamma Mia – the best most woman-positive movie of last summer and the only movie that came out last year that I bought on DVD. Also The Reader, Revolutionary Road, Last Chance Harvey, and many more. I get tired of movies with only token women in them. I want to see quality roles and characters! A great example is The Ghost and Mrs. Muir with Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. I have a list started on Netflix.

Two other great movies with strong women characters are The World Unseen and I Can’t Think Straight.
